Softball Splits with Rose State; Win First Region 2 Game

(March 6, 2021) Midwest City, Oklahoma – Bucks Softball travelled to Rose State College for their Region 2 Opener. The Bucks would split with the Raiders, losing 15-0 and winning 11-10 in extra innings. The win made the Bucks 8-10 on the season and 1-1 in Region 2 play.

Game 1

In game one, it was all Rose State. The Raiders scored 2 runs in the 1st, 8 in the 2nd, and 5 in the 3rd inning to win 15-0 in 5 innings. The Raiders out hit the Bucks 11 to 4 and capitalized on 5 Bucks errors. The 4 hits came from Gracie Kimbrell (North Little Rock, AR), Mackenzie Person (Bonham, TX), Megan Czinder (League City, TX), and Jasmine Cooks (Center, TX).

Kimbrell (4-5) got the start in the circle and pitched 2 innings and gave up 10 runs (5 earned) on 5 hits in the loss. In relief, Brooke Detommaso (Las Vegas, NV) threw 2 innings and give up 5 runs (0 earned) on 6 hits. Both struck out 1 and walked 1 apiece.

Game 2

The Bucks started fast to get the bad taste out of their mouths from game 1. With 1 out, Kimbrell and Kristen McMillan (Winnsboro, TX) would single to setup Madison Humphry's (Murfreesboro, AR) 3-run homer (1st of the season). In the next at-bat, Mackenzie Person would hit her third of the season, a solo shot to left field. On defense, Gracie Kimbrell got the start in game 2 and held the Raiders scoreless after 1. Bucks led 4-0.

In the 2nd, Ashton Daniel (Rockwall, TX) got it going with 1 out and reached on a walk. With 2 outs, Kimbrell doubled to score Daniel. The next at-bat, McMillan would drive in Kimbrell on a fly ball error by the Raiders and advanced to 2nd base. This setup Madison Humphry's second home run of the game, picking up 2 more RBIs. Rose State was able to plate 2 runs in the bottom frame, but the Bucks led 8-2 after 2 innings.

Both teams remained scoreless in the 3rd inning, and the Bucks were able to scratch across a run in the 4th. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, Avery Cotten (Longview, TX) picked up her 2nd RBI of the season on a line drive to centerfield to plate Humphry. But, the Bucks would leave the bases loaded to end top half. Kimbrell struck out a Raider hitter with runners on 2nd and 3rd to end the inning. Bucks led 9-2 after 4.

The Bucks would go in order in the 5th before Rose State would pick up 3 runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 9-5 in the favor of the Bucks. With 1 out in the 6th, Humphry continued her hot game and singled to left field, but she would be doubled off a fly out to right field to end the top half. Rose would add another run on a solo home run. Bucks led 9-6.

After a scoreless top half of the 7th, Rose State added 3 runs to extend the game into extra innings. After a hit-by-pitch, single, and double steal in the top of the 8th, Mackenzie Person would single drive in McMillan. Sydney Smith (Siloam Springs, AR) would ground out to first base and plated Humphry. Cotten reached on an error, but a double play would end the top half. Bucks lead 11-9.

Rose State would add a run on a solo homer in the top of the 8th, but it wouldn't be enough. Bucks picked up their first Region 2 win, 11-10.
