Ladies Draw with Aggies

Ladies Draw with Aggies

(September 11, 2024) Mena, Arkansas - Coming off their best start in school history, the ladies of Bucks Soccer had a tough matchup with the Murray State Aggies on Wednesday afternoon. Last season, the Lady Aggies finished as the Region II Runner-Up. This match is a good measuring stick for the Bucks, but it could also have region tournament seeding implications.

This was a very tight game from start to finish with both teams going toe-to-toe for every pass, tackle, or header. Murray State scored their goal early in the first half, while UARM scored theirs later in the half, reflecting to the to and fro of the momentum in the game. Murray State dominated the early minutes with precise passing, which had the Bucks on the back foot. The pressure resulted in a goal from a high ball into the penalty area which UARM struggled to deal with. The Bucks made a few changes in their attacking options, and the change in emphasis enabled the Bucks to get back into the game and start to push Murray State backwards, ending the first half on top.

This momentum continued in the second half, and the Bucks created a lot of goal scoring opportunities which went astray because of a lack of focus with that last pass in front of goal. The team could sense a goal was coming and sure enough the ball did indeed end up in the net after a scramble in the penalty area. A shot was sent towards the goal, the goalkeeper saved it, but only managed to land the ball onto Jasmin Bislev Nielsen (Aabybro, Denmark) head for the equalizing goal.

The game concluded with both teams going close to score the go ahead goal, particularly UARM who hit the post when Lidia Rodriguez Dominguez (Ourense, Spain)had a curling shot form 20 yards hitting the inside of the far post. Another inch to the left and the ball would have nestled in the corner of the goal. Carla Todd (Lochgilphead, United Kingdom) also drove a ball from outside the 18 that hit the crossbar.

The Bucks played well defensively, resulting in 14 saves for goalkeeper Mac Dellinger (Little Rock, AR).

Coach Sherry was not only happy with the result, but he is pleased with his teams adaptibility. "This was a great test for the ladies, and they did a tremendous job against a very good team. I was especially pleased that they all adapted their playing style to what was needed in order for us to be competitive in the game. This adaptability will prove very important moving forward as we strive to achieve our goal of qualifying for postseason play."

The ladies now have a much earned week off from games and will play again on September 18th at NOC-Enid. Kickoff will be at 5 pm at Advance Soccer Complex.
